Households and members

A household is a group in the JellyPass admin site: an ID, a name and a list of Jellyfin users. Requests made by a member are shared with every household they belong to.

The admin site

Sign in at /admin/ with a Jellyfin administrator account. Its tabs:

Create a household

  1. In Groups, create a group. Its ID becomes part of the household's address, so use lowercase letters, numbers and hyphens, at most 63 characters (for example grove).
  2. Add its members: existing Jellyfin users, or new non-administrator users created here (optionally imported into Seerr too).
  3. Optionally, under One-tap sign-in, mark members whose Jellyfin account has no password: on their household's address they sign in with one tap. Marking a member who does have a password stops them signing in there. A Jellyfin account without a password can be used by anyone who reaches Jellyfin and knows its name, so use it only where that is fine.

Joining a household later does not change older grants. Add the household to those titles in Grants, or add the member to a household already assigned.

Household addresses

With HOUSEHOLD_DOMAIN set, each household's address is:

https://<prefix><household-id>.<HOUSEHOLD_DOMAIN>

The prefix is HOUSEHOLD_HOST_PREFIX, jelly- unless you change it. With HOUSEHOLD_DOMAIN=example.com, household grove is https://jelly-grove.example.com; with the prefix set to media- it is https://media-grove.example.com. The Groups tab shows each household's address. An address no household has answers 404.

Give members their household's address. They use it as the server address in any Jellyfin app, in the JellyPass app, and for the web app at /jellypass/app/. The JellyPass phone app also opens setup links such as jellypass://connect?address=https://jelly-grove.example.com, which fill the address in (and only that).

What a household address changes

Filtering the sign-in list is about privacy and convenience, not authentication: members still sign in with Jellyfin, and Jellyfin's own policies still apply. Keep a separate, non-household way to reach Jellyfin as an administrator.

Sharing a title with another household

Households can't see each other's requests, but a household can get a title another household asked for: Get this in an app adds their household to that title, without telling them who has it. This applies to titles that came from a request; titles an administrator assigned by hand, and households an administrator removed from a title, are left as the administrator set them. Administrators can assign households to any title in Grants or Library.
